Flow Direction
All sewer lines, both mains and services, are digitized in the direction of flow. Services are digitized from the buildings/structures to the sewer main. Sewer mains are digitized/drawn from the uphill node to the downhill node. |

Preserving Existing Identifiers
Existing manhole numbers will be preserved. Where existing manhole numbers have been assigned and can be determined using existing sources, those numbers will be added to the OldMHNo field in the manhole feature class. Unique GIS facility IDs for each element of manhole features will be assigned. |

The sewer system is represented by a geo database. Sewers are broken at a variety of appurtenances, including but not limited to capped ends, manholes, cleanouts, lift stations, and treatment facilities. Sewer mains are not broken at sanitary sewer “service” or “lateral” connection points. When sewer mains are broken by an appurtenance. The applicable point type is assigned to the appurtenance, along with related attributes and features. All sanitary sewer “services” or “laterals” are captured under a “LateralLine” feature class. The end of the services are graphically snapped to the sewer mains but do not break the main.

Service Representation
A "service" is defined as a lateral running from a pipe main directly to a building/structure with no additional branches/pipe connections and no appurtenances other than a backflow device.
sewer services will be represented as lines. The sewer service line will be drawn from the building/parcel to connect the discharge end on sewer main. The service is snapped on to the sewer main but will not break the associated sewer main. |

Lift Station Representation
Sewer pump stations, while complex in nature, are represented in the geo database as points which are connected to the collection system and assigned a unique feature class and symbolization. Internal details (i.e., piping, pumps, footprint, valves, etc.) are not represented in the geo database. Refer SewerLegend.pdf for the symbolization of each feature class.
